Major Do's in Treating Exfoliative Cheilitis.

To all of you who are silently suffering from this annoying, mysterious condition, do not give up. You probably ended up here after many hours of scrounging the internet. Keep looking. Keep learning. The more you know, the better you will understand your condition, and heal yourself. I hope this list helps you out.

-Do use a mild steriod (preferablly once in three weeks or so) , especially if you know that you are going to see a dentist or know that you will be moving your lips alot (speeches, presentations etc).

-Why?  The steriod will prevent the crusts from forming, and is a relief sometimes. I do not recommend the use of it everyday or every week though, because it is a temporary solution. The minute you stop using it, your cheilitis will be back even stronger. I say to use it once every three weeks or even month because it prevents your lips from reacting too aggressively to moving your lips. In case of a dentist appointment where you will be opening your mouth moderately widely or doing a speech or presentation where you will be moving your lips for longer than you would prefer with exfoliative cheilitis. Also, the steriod helps with morale. It reminds you that you are still you, that you look the same. It is like a cheat day on a diet lol.

-Do continue to clean your teeth, but limit it to once a day.

-Why?  The reason is that you do not want to reek havoc on your lips more than once a day by disturbing the lip skin. Plus, there is the added ingredient in most or all tooth paste, sodium lauryl sulfate. This substance creates the froth in tooth paste and some other cleaning ingredients. I have found that this substance is quite harsh on lips with exfoliative cheilitis. Applying a Very thin layer of olive oil or even Vaseline (be very short handed with the Vaseline because you do not want it to stay on your lips after brushing). Apply these ingridents before you brush so that if you are using a tooth paste containing Sodium lauryl Sulfate, if wont really land directly on your lips.

-Do try really hard to improve your diet.
-Why? This is not exactly for internal health as you might expect, but for having to avoid to brush or clean your teeth that often. The health aspect is also a bonus. If you eat clean, and avoid sugar and other wheat related foods, the less you have to spend time cleaning your teeth. Clean food does not really give you cavities. I should mention though that this was a tough one. I really tried to eat clean for two weeks and then would reward myself with a big cup of ice-cream. If you think you have better self control, do try this. It helps. Daniel Miller mentioned this on his blog also.

Do consider using oils extracted from animals.
Why?- I know this might sound gross, as a previous vegetarian, I was reluctant to use it. Lanolin, for instance, has been known to penetrate deep within the skin and provide relief. This substance made out of wool wax has water proof properties.

On my next post, I will write an in depth look at animal fats or extracts and why I believe it a miracle substance in the treatment of cheilitis.

Remember this list is what worked for Me. There are going to be many of you with different degrees of cheilitis or on different stages that this might not really work for you. I am willing to offer any kind of help by drawing on my own experience. Please message me or leave a comment if you have specific questions about this condition.

  3. Mia I guess I'll just ask one important question for now... For the past month I have been doing the aquaphor treatment every day and the steroid once a week... I assumed that the dead skin/ gunk would stay on the whole 11months, but my routine been going something like this. After a whole week and a half of not peeling and looking really bad with gunk and dead skin I will add a little water from the faucet and it will literally take off the whole layer of dead skin itself. Then my lips would look normal again. would this be the whole process for 11 months where it builds up for a week and a half or 2 weeks then the dead skin eventually come off? Or through time would the skin that builds up eventually become the skin that heals where it doesn't come off on its own????

    1. Dear Mathew,
Yes, I am still answering questions. First off I would like to applaud you for choosing the journey to heal. It is no easy feat. You are on the right track by choosing to moisturize your lips. However, I did try aquaphor and found that it didn't help me at the very beginning of my journey. What I can say healed my lips was the pure lanolin. It acts as a non-permeable barrier between your lips and water. Can I ask what kind of steroid you are on? Choosing a mild steroid will be the best choice in the end. That also will affect how much peeling you are experiencing. I will say this, with exfoliative cheilitis, you will experience aggressive peeling. In my experience, my lip skin shed every week. Keep in mind I did not use any steriods at the beginning. I found that using the lanolin product on my lips helped me keep the skin on my lips for a week and a half and sometimes even 15 days. I think that is because it acted as a water repellent on my lips. If you have read my other posts, I also talk about some ways you can avoid exposing your lips to too much water.
I hope this helps. Stay strong.

  4. Wow u replyd the next day thanks Mia! i been really busy with school and work and wasn't really sure if I would get a response.

But to answer your question the steroid I am using is hydrocortisone ointment usp, 2.5% referred to me by a dermatologist. Is this one ok? And I took the aquaphor treatment from danielxmiller.

I see you said pure lanolin helpd for you? Do you think I can use this the same time using the aquaphor? And where can I purchase it at?

And just to be sure because I don't want to be doing this wrong? Every week or 2 the dead skin would eventually come off itself right? I just hope I'm not peeling because literally after a week or 2 with just a little water the whole layer of skin would comes off its self and my lips look normal again. Then about the 3rd or 4th day it will start building up again. Is this the process for the whole 11months? Or would it be for 2, 4 or 6 months then maybe the skin that builds up would be the skin that eventually heals? This question is important because it really confuses me.

But again thanks Mia for taking time out of your day to answer my questions. I'll be checking in everyday from now on and Sorry if I asked a lot but as you know this condition is really depressing and I am just trying to stay strong and positive! I don't really go out unless it's school or work but I keep telling my self sacrifice this time now and I'll be good for the rest of my life haha. Thanks again and ill talk to you soon.

    1. Hi Mathew,

I read your comments. Are you having any luck?

    2. Hi Mathew,
My apologies for not replying sooner. I had been really busy with work and couldn't really keep up with this site. But no worries it's is summer and I am back now. The hydrocortisone cream you are using seems fine (although it is stronger than the one I used, and it was given the OK from your doctor). The weekly peeling cycle seems about normal. At the 4-5 month mark, I noticed that the peeling cycle was longer and the thin was also thinner. If you haven't read my post about clipping the overhanging dead skin on your lips, which is clearly detached, please do so. This will help prevent the the other attached skin from coming off. Make sure the skin you are clipping is clearly detached though. I don't want you cutting skin that is actually attached. Hope this helps. Good luck and stay strong!!!!

    3. Hi Mathew,
I just noticed that I hadn't answered your question about lanolin. I personally used it alone because it was really think and moisturizing on its on. You can order lanolin on amazon or ask a pharmacist. The brand I used was Lansinoh. I hope this helps.

    1. Did they find a fungal infection on your lips? If so, then it make sense. If not then I am not sure it will make any difference, not in my experience at least.

  6. Hey Mathew, do you expose ur lips directly to water when you say the build up comes off afterwards?

  8. Yea after about a week and a half I'll let water touch it from the faucet, and I will have it come out slow. Then it will take off all the build up and my lips look normal again.

    1. I highly suggest clipping the detached skin slowly throughout the week (as the skin becomes loose and detached), instead of peeling it off all at once when water touches it. I also recommend not letting water touch your lips unless you are cleaning your teeth. I wrote a post about my what I did as a routine.

  9. Hey Mia. I looked up pure lanolin online and found a lip balm called nipple balm. I think it had lanolin in it. Is this one ok to use? Hope to hear from you soon :)

    1. The brand I used was from Lansinoh. I think it is the purest out there, but anything with pure 100% lanolin should work. And you are right, it is sold as nipple cream.

  10. Hi Mia,

Thank you for posting this! This is really helpful! This is now my 6th month with EC and I am not just discovering your blog. I have a few follow up questions.

    1. How are your lips now? Did it come back?
    2. Did you ever discover if your condition gluten related?
3.Do you still have to use a steriod every now and again?

4.When you were using Lansinoh Lanolin, did your lips still turn white after the water touched them?

I am REALLY looking forward to your answers! :)

    1. HI Ugochi,
My lips are healed now!!!! I did purchase a Dr.Dan's lip balm with only 1% hydrocortisone cream (online you don't need prescription) after I reached the 6-7 month mark. I found that the sort of harder consistency of Dr.Dans lip balm was bearable at that stage, but not at the beginning. My lips were to sensitive at the beginning for that. I did use a steriod prescribed by a doctor maybe once every 3 months, if I had an occasion to attend. I did not use it consistently. The lanolin was the only thing that gave my lips comfort from the inflammation. And yes it turned my lips white if water touched it but it dried and went back to normal. That is why I avoided water unless I was cleaning my teeth. I wrote a post about my daily routine, it is more in depth. I hope this helps. oh and I do not have a gluten allergy!

  11. Hi Mia!
My name is Tamara and I believe that I have exfoliative cheilitis. My condition began around the 4th of July and it's still ongoing. It began as being very red, raw and swollen and it has always been confined strictly to my bottom lip. It soon progressed into forming thick yellow crusts which I was given antibiotics for. The crusts fell off with antibiotics and antivirals initially and then formed again a week or so later. they then fell off again about a week and a half after that but my lip still has yellow crusts. only they are not as thick as before. I am seeing a dermatologist next week because my gp couldn't diagnose me and I have already been misdiagnosed twice as having herpes and impetigo! I am honestly terrified because I have read that this condition is incurable. Is there any hope for me? Hope to hear from you soon.

    1. Hi Tamara!

I am glad that you sought medical advice early on in your symptoms. They will rule out issues that are more serious beyond just external skin. Did you get tested for candida? It was not the case for me, but it could be a fungal infection. In my case, it was caused by physical damage to my mouth in the form of stretching. The only thing that got me through the hard 5 months was lanolin. The brand I used was Lansinoh. I wrote about it on this blog, if you want to know more. After 5 months of having EC,leaving the skin on, and using lanolin, it started to heal. I hope this helps.

    2. Hi Mohit!
Have you seen a doctor? The first thing you need to do is get tested to see if it is something that a dermatologist can help with. If it does not get cured by the creams they prescribe you then th best advice I can give you is to use lanolin. I wrote about it in this blog. Use the lansinoh brand it is 100% pure. This ointment helped me disguise my EC and it protected my lips.

  13. I ended up having an unrelated issue and believe it was candida in my prostate, started to get tingling around vermillion border so I went to the dr, he gave me antibiotics and 2 days after noticed the tingling got worse and the vermillion borders around my lips felt so dry as if I had tape on my lips, started to eat better and avoid sugar . Also taking probiotics and vitamins ..I would apply different lip balms but only temporary relief, after stoping to use the lip balms I started to peel excessively on my lips, big chunks of what I assume is dead skin, yellowish color from what I saw, underneath was raw skin which I thought was normal, I peeled as I did in the past,I've always done this.(I know, not a good idea) bad habit I guess..so I've tried coconut oil and get temporary relief..but after awhile the peeling process starts again..any time I eat or drink I get the white gunks on my lips, I'm so depressed, i feel like I have the worst luck in the world.any advice?

  14. If your trigger is a candida infection, then I think you should clear that up first with diet and antifungal creams, I think. I am not a doctor but I am sure your doctor can give you more information on this. To make this bearable though I have used some tools like lanolin but I do not know if it is going to work in your case. Please ask your doctor about this. Also, read my blog entries for what worked for me. Stay strong. You can defeat this, just needs patience.

  15. Hi Mia. Glad to hear that you've healed from something that seems pretty tough to heal from. I've been using lanolin. I have a few questions about your journey. Besides seeing the grooves returning to your lips, how did you know you were in fact healing? Did the scabs on your lips still appear but weren't as large. Smaller scabs? Did the crust start taking longer to form. Meaning after the crusts came off, it took even longer for them to return and they returned lighter and yellowed after a few days? Did you ever try and stretch your lips with the build up or were you more inclined to not laugh and so on to not over extend your lips. Sorry for all the questions.I'm just trying to see if my healing is progressing? Thanks for doing this blog. It really does help a lot of us. You're time is much appreciated.
